Making preparations for war.

Gas had been a deadly weapon in the First World War, so civilians were issued with gas masks in the Second World War.

Gas masks were allocated to each person for fear of a chemical attack. Practice sessions were held at school times, although in the end the need for gas masks never arose. Special masks were made for babies and even pets.

In Year 4 we have been learning about the steps people took to prepare for War. We explored Gas Masks to see different types of gas masks and listened to people’s stories about having to wear them when practicing for a chemical attack.

In D&T we used a range of materials for making our own model Gas Mask. We had to measure, mark out, cut and shape a range of materials, using appropriate tools, equipment and techniques. Then we had to join and combine the different materials accurately.

We hope you are impressed by our results!
