Houses

On entering the school, all of the children are placed in one of our 4 houses:

  • Cadhay
  • Chanters
  • Escot
  • Salston

The names of the houses were decided upon by the children and reflect four of the historic houses in or around Ottery St Mary. We aim to keep siblings in the same houses which mirrors the approach taken by the local secondary school, The Kings School.

Our House Captains come from our Year 6 classes and the children apply for the positions towards the end of Year 5. Our captains are easily identifiable by their distinctive t-shirts and hoodies which reflect their house colours.

Throughout the year the House Captains work hard to organise and run events that encourage all of the children to participate and work together in the spirit of friendly competition. House events over the past few years have included: sponsored tar barrel running, guy building, Christmas tree decorating, football, hockey, tag-rugby, cross-country running, biathlon. cake bake-offs, talent show, a cycling ‘hill climb’ and of course Sports Day.

House points are also awarded to acknowledge good work, effort and behaviour around the school. Children who earn enough house points during the year receive Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates and finally a Headteacher Award which are all celebrated in assemblies.
