Year 3 loved their introduction to the rock cycle – demonstrating how the three main types of rock on Earth form – with chocolate, marshmallows and biscuits!

Chocolate can be ground into small particles (weathered), heated, cooled and compressed just like rocks. Unlike rocks this can all be done safely and at reasonable temperatures (much cooler than deep within the Earth where temperatures are high enough to actually melt rock, turning it from a solid to a liquid). We created sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous chocolate and at the end of it we all enjoyed a very tasty treat.
