Welcome to Year 1

We do lots of fantastic learning in Year 1 and try really hard with our work!

As we enter Year 1, we transition from play-based learning to a more formal approach. We try our best to do this as smoothly as possible and ensure we still make learning fun!
In maths, we follow the Power Maths scheme and learn through discussion and investigation using lots of resources to help us. Examples of our approach to maths can be found in our Year 1 Calculation Policy

We continue to learn phonics following the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds approach – more information can be found here. 

In English, we carefully choose texts that inspire and support the children’s learning. 
We have a lovely outside area which the children… and the adults love!
In science, the children learn about plants, everyday materials, seasons and animals. To enhance the children’s learning we learn with hands-on approach wherever possible.
As part of our learning in topic, we use the local environment as much as we can and we love going on trips as we feel this is important to enhance the children’s learning.
